- Two Friends, One Guide and an Unforgettable Adventure
My friend and I are recent college graduates, meaning we have little money and even less knowledge so when it came to picking a guide for our trip to Morocco, we didn’t know where to begin. Perhaps we could save money by skipping the private tour and going with a group? Or taking a shorter trip? But then we found Camel Excursions and we decided to go for it–and it was the best decision of our trip.
The experience was far and away defined by our guide Rachid. From the moment he picked us up (punctually) in Marrakech, we knew we were in good hands. Rachid spoke great English, was very knowledgeable and a safe, efficient driver. But more than all this, he is incredibly kind and attentive, making sure you’re taken care of on every moment of the trip. This was made immediately clear when my friend broke his camera lens on the first day. He was understandably upset, as taking photographs is a great pleasure of traveling for him. Rachid said that we could check in Ourazazate for a camera store and sure enough, we were able to find a place that had the right lens with Rachid translating for us. That is the kind of care and attention Rachid pays to his clients. He was always checking in about if we were comfortable in the car or if we wanted to see or do something else. Even after parting ways in Fez, he continued to check in on us and make sure the rest of our vacation was going smoothly.
And none of this is even to mention the trip itself! My friend and I typically travel to cities and do the sightseeing/museum route. Driving through the mountains and into the desert was a very different experience for us and we loved it. We got to see an entirely new part of Morocco that we would have been unable to see on our own. Even if we had been able to manage the mountainous roads in a car on our own, we would not have had all the insight and knowledge Rachid does, nor know so many people. Rachid has friends everywhere, and they are equally eager to make your trip the best possible. Even though they were some tiring long stretches in the car at times, the whole thing was absolutely worth it. Highlights include a particular guide, Reda, at the kasbah amridil; eating figs right off the tree in the Dades valley; strolling through the vibrant water of the Tondra Gorge; meeting our camels on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes; sipping tea in a nomads tent while discussing the different ways of life lived by Moroccans; a stop in the cedar groves of the middle Atlas Mountains where we saw monkeys up incredibly close. The trip is designed well, with enough stops to make the immense amount of ground one covers seem not so long, and an afternoon off in the desert, necessary for recharging after so many rich experiences.
I cannot recommend Camel Excursions enough to anyone who wants a fulfilling, jam packed Moroccan experiences
- Wouldn’t have done it any other way!
My friend and I travelled from Fes to Marrakech through the Sahara Desert. The journey was a really long one (8-10 hour drive every day for 3 days ) but it was also extremely scenic and spectacular. We knew the journey wouldn’t be so enjoyable without Camel Excursions.
Our communication with Ismael (the owner of Camel Excursions I suppose) before the journey was smooth and pleasant, his replies were always clear, stating the itinerary in details and giving us information on every accommodation options and their respective prices. We knew this company would be reliable judging by the time and effort they invested in talking to customers, and I was not wrong! I got a cut after the camel ride due to my own clumsiness and was bleeding, Ismael immediately brought out a first aid box and treated my wound. I really didn’t expect that honestly.
I must dedicate a paragraph for our wonderful guide Iddir who was so attentive to our needs and always made sure we were okay. He tried so hard to keep the long journey entertaining so that we would stay awake and wouldn’t miss any snow-capped mountains, ancient berber villages and oases, rock formations on the way. His passion and his love for Morocco are contagious! Our trip wouldn’t be so wonderful without him.
Of course, the desert was the highlight of our journey, indeed the highlight of our 9-day Morocco trip. No words could ever do its magnificent beauty justice. Sand dunes after sand dunes, sunset and sunrise over the desert, the bumpy camel rides, this is truly a lifetime experience. My friend and I chose the luxury accommodation and stayed in a deluxe campsite (Luxury Camp Chebbi). I didn’t know we could have delicious course dinner, carpeted private suite, comfortable bedding, hot shower and clean toilet in a desert before! Our stay in Sahara was delightful, and our advice is if you can afford, go for the superior accommodation, it made the whole experience so different!
We were really satisfied with the accommodations and restaurants chose by Camel Excursions and their overall arrangements. Of course you will find some cheaper alternatives in Morocco and honestly all the tours pretty much have the same route, but I am not sure if other tour operators would go so further like Ismael to make sure the customers are safe (are the cars well maintained? How do they handle accidents? Are the trips insured?) and happy. It’s the little things that count 😉
- A trip to the Sahara desert that I will never forget
- Unvergessliche Marokko Reise
- Un mot : PARFAIT !!
Wow wow wow wow wow !!
- SOOO MUCH FUN!!!
From the beginning, booking this excursion has been so simple. I actually never read the reviews prior. My friend who used this company last year just gave me Ismail’s email address and said “email this guy if you want to do a desert excursion, he’s legit”. Sure enough from emailing and asking about prices and schedules to actually going on the trip, everything has been smooth sailing. Moha was our guide and he picked us up from our riad in Marrakech. Every day of our 3 day trip (Marrakech to Fes with one night in Dades Valley and one night camping in the Sahara desert of Merzouga) Moha has been so kind and accommodating. He bought me medicine because he said my cough sounded bad and he wanted to make sure I had a good experience riding camels! He also shot a music video for us LOL which was basically him playing music from the car and us doing a slow motion walk with the Sahara behind us. It was hilarious. We had a great time and felt incredibly safe and taken care of. We even met our guides mom at some point and she served us tea! Thank you Ismail and Moha for being organized, attentive, friendly, and fun. I would recommend this company to anyone wanting to do a desert camel riding excursion 🙂
Just remember to bring cash with you. As an American, I keep mistakenly thinking we can use credit cards out here and forget that we largely have to pay for most things in Morocco in cash. I did pay a deposit a month ago via PayPal but the balance is paid in cash. Just FYI.
- It’s too difficult to put in words how amazing this experience was…
but I will do my best.
First of all, we are idiots and only took the one night tour from Fes into the desert. If time allows it… Go for more time!!!
We were picked up in Fes at our riad by our driver, Hicham. It was a long way to Merzouga but he made the drive comfortable and stopped in quite a few places so we could eat and take photos.
The real experience was the desert. Photos and words cannot do justice to what we experienced. To start with, the camel ride into the desert was surreal for me. Yes, camels are uncomfortable to ride. But when are you ever going to ride a camel into the sahara? We rode in the evening and the view went on and on of orange sand dunes. At that moment, I couldn’t believe I was in Africa, in Morocco, in the sahara desert.
Our guide into the desert was Mostapha and he is amazing!! He made the trip even more memorable. Being able to sit and talk to him and the other Berbers about their life was truly the part that I will never forgot. They are so giving. The food that was made was traditional and sooooo good. Mostapha even made sure that I got vegetarian food.
Like I said, leaving the desert so early was probably my biggest regret on my trip. We wish we stayed longer and got more immersed in the culture. I highly recommend planning your trip with Ismail, he answered any and all questions that I had and planned a truly great adventure.
